WEBINAR SERIES:
Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for over 41 million deaths worldwide each year with 85% of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In 2011, the campaign for the prevention and control of NCDs was introduced as a priority activity by the United Nations. As global health priorities transitioned from the Millennium Development Goals to the Sustainable Development Goals, NCDs emerged as a set of conditions that have direct links to achieving goals and targets of the SDGs. The CORE NCD Interest Group Webinar Series will provide an opportunity to understand the progress we have made in elevating the NCD agenda since the first United Nations High-Level Meeting on NCD and to craft solutions around the challenges that persist. It is important that we identify sustainable opportunities and solutions for integrating NCD priorities into global health programs recognizing the burden the current COVID-19 pandemic has placed on global citizens and health systems. Webinar participants will have an opportunity to learn from NCD experts and to share their own experiences working as advocates and implementers.
SESSION 3: Youth Leaders Taking Action: Developing an NCDs-Focused Accountability Framework
Thank you for joining this interactive conversation focused on the impact of NCDs on youth, 15-24 years old, and the role of youth engagement and advocacy in accountability for NCDs. This webinar was facilitated and moderated by several young leaders who are taking action on NCDs in their communities and beyond. Accountability is the theme for this year’s Global Week of Action (www.ActonNCDs.org ), and together, we will organize a list priority actions to achieve national and global targets to prevent and control NCDs to be requested of health leaders and policy makers. The webinar explored health priorities within a real-time context, in consideration of the UN Declaration for Universal Health Coverage, to improve accountability among all leaders. An integrated approach to health systems serving people living with NCDs and youth is needed to achieve the NCDs-related goals and targets within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discussion considered an integrated, lifecourse approach to health and wellness, including a discussion of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulted in a call to action to include health priorities addressing NCDs prevention and control, in the context of Universal Health Coverage.
OBJECTIVES
- To outline an accountability framework for health leaders and policy makers, focusing on priority health concerns of young people living with and at risk for NCDs.
- To define key roles for young leaders, to enhance their engagement with health leaders and policy makers at national and global levels.
- To describe ways to develop an integrated health platform, consistent with the UN plan for Universal Health Coverage, that will reflect an inclusive life course approach from early childhood to adulthood.
