The Framework for Action sets forth the key diagnostic findings on the current vaccine manufacturing environment in Africa and recommends eight bold programs to unlock Africa’s potential to grow and scale vaccine development and manufacturing over the next two decades.

Notably, some African countries, like South Africa or Morocco are still waiting for large swaths of their allotted vaccines. Populous countries in Asia – some of which have received big allotments – are also waiting for huge amounts of life-saving vaccines, among them Indonesia and Pakistan.

Nigeria, Colombia and Ukraine are among the countries faring about average in COVAX deliveries, while the Philippines or Rwanda have had their allotments filled to a larger degree so far.

This webinar brought together African leaders and opinion shapers to discuss ongoing efforts to bolster Africa’s research and development (R&D) capacity. The dialogue focused on multi-stakeholder action towards building capacity for vaccine development, production, and distribution, opportunities for regional collaboration, and solutions to barriers such as financing, vaccine hesitancy, and access to licenses and technology.

After the rapid development of the COVID-19 vaccines and subsequent rollout, there has been an infodemic of misinformation circulating about COVID-19 vaccine safety and efficacy, reducing public trust in getting vaccinated. The challenges and solutions to address them vary from country to country.

Panelists for this episode shared lessons learned in Uganda and Kenya about promoting the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines: what they and their organizations are doing to promote vaccine confidence, what is working, and what could work. The panel was followed by a Q&A and discussion.
