World Vision’s Experience in Improving PD/Hearth Program Quality

Monday, February 2, 2015
Hosted by the CORE Group Nutrition Working Group

World Vision has been implementing PD/Hearth since 1999. In 2010, an evaluation was conducted in 8 countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Overall, results from the evaluation showed that countries with stronger implementation of technical components had better results. This emphasized need for stronger technical preparation and support throughout the program.

WV decided to improve the quality of PD/Hearth programs across the partnership by standardizing the trainings (Master Training, ToFs, and Volunteer Trainings) – especially focusing on the technical components for the Master Trainings and ToFs, reducing the number of levels of cascade trainings, developing tools that could assist in the program design (e.g. menu calculator, initial assessment excel template with automatic z-score calculation, automatic identification of PD, non-PD, and ND households), standardizing monitoring tools, and developing a database system on Excel as well as on mobile phones

Three Master Training workshops were conducted in Africa (East, West, and South in 2011) and two Master Training workshops in Asia (East and South Asia Pacific in 2010 and 2014). Major improvements are being seen in PD/Hearth results in numerous countries in just 1-2 years after attending a standardized PD/Hearth Trainer of Facilitators (ToF) workshop led by a Master Trainer certified through the Master Training workshop.

All in all, the presentation shares in detail how WV has improved PD/Hearth program quality across Africa and Asia.
