The Acting on the Call report, released in 2014, lays out a roadmap in 24 priority countries to scale up proven, life-saving interventions that can save 15 million children and 600,000 women by 2020. The 2016 Acting on the Call report provides an update on progress in 24 countries and details how by targeting efforts on the poorest 40% we can save 8 million lives. The report also announces Burma as the 25th priority country and provides updates on USAID’s work there. Kelly Saldana, Deputy Director of the Office of Health, Infectious Diseases and Nutrition (HIDN) in the Bureau for Global Health at USAID and one of the authors of the Acting on the Call reports, presented on the reports and how they relate to USAID’s work to end preventable child and maternal deaths. Kelly Saldana counts 15 years of experience in Public Health and International Development. She has supported a wide array of health programs, especially in Latin America. She has served in a variety of roles within USAID. Immediately prior to becoming Deputy Director, Kelly worked in the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Division in HIDN. Kelly spent seven and a half years in the LAC bureau as a Senior Public Health Advisor. In that position she covered health systems strengthening and monitoring and evaluation, among other responsibilities. Prior to joining USAID, Kelly worked for the State of North Carolina’s Immunization Branch as the public health epidemiologist and registry project business specialist. Kelly was a Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua and holds a Masters in Public Health and a Masters in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh.
