The Future is Now! Youth, NCDs, and the COVID-19 Pandemic

Wednesday, August 19, 2020
Hosted by CORE Group
Webinar Series:
Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for over 40 million deaths worldwide each year with 80% of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In 2011, the campaign for the prevention and control of NCDs was introduced as a priority activity by the United Nations. As global health priorities transitioned from the Millennium Development Goals to the Sustainable Development Goals, NCDs emerged as a set of conditions that have direct links to achieving goals and targets of the SDGs. The CORE NCD Interest Group Webinar Series will provide an opportunity to understand the progress we have made in elevating the NCD agenda since the first United Nations High-Level Meeting on NCD and to craft solutions around the challenges that persist.

Session 2: The world is facing a common problem due to COVID-19 pandemic. Countries have lost economically, and they have experienced great challenges, including challenged healthcare systems, inadequate disease surveillance, and health system shortages, among others. Young people living with non-communicable diseases (PLWNCDs) may be disproportionately affected. However little is known about the impact of this pandemic on this vulnerable population. This webinar addressed some of the impacts of this pandemic on youth mental health and well-being.
This youth-led webinar included a number of knowledgeable, experienced youth advocates, representing various organizations, institutions, and coalitions. They have published papers in international, peer-reviewed journals, worked closely with researchers in NCDs, and work closely with local and national leaders to ensure that youth living with NCDs are included in national health plans. They provided an interactive platform to discuss both national and global actions that will be required to address the health needs of youth living with and at risk for NCDs, with a focus on the COVID-19 pandemic.
