Building an Equitable Future: Climate Action, Inclusivity, and Health
CORE Group and its extensive membership of global health practitioners, policy makers, academics, and frontline and community health workers (CHWs) are committed to collectively addressing the pressing global health effects of climate change through a thematic global initiative. In response to the rise in current global climate threats and opportunities, CORE Group identified key objectives and activities to address climate change and global health through the active engagement of its global membership and technical working groups in One Health, Nutrition and WASH—among other areas—in the closing plenary of its Global Health Practitioner Conference in January 2021. That initial session and subsequent discussions sparked the development of the following approach:
Program Objectives
To create a world where everyone participates in the mitigation of adverse climate challenges and the responsible use of nature’s resources, it is critical to approach climate action through the lens of equity based on a strategic and inclusive vision.
Increase technical capacity of partners to align climate and health policies with international standards and generate new evidence-based, innovative, and promising practices, based on a foundation of equity and integrated technical areas.
Strengthen engagement with civil society, youth groups, women, local institutions, indigenous communities and BIPOC communities, disability organizations, community-based organizations, academic institutions, and INGOs to take action on integrated climate and health issues.
Advance learning and use of evidence in integrated climate and health programming, especially in communities that are hard to reach or vulnerable.
Augment cross-sectoral partnerships and strengthen existing partnerships to create opportunities for innovation and act collaboratively for integrated climate and health.
CORE Group’s Integrated Approach to the Climate Crisis
To address the compounding effects of climate change on communities’ health, CORE Group has adopted an integrated approach of Analysis, Advocacy, and Action to address the effects of climate that are currently affecting women, children, and adolescents who are most vulnerable.
To guide our response to climate action, CORE Group has identified three priority areas where a combined focus on global advocacy and community-based programming will address the most pressing climate change issues facing women, children and adolescents worldwide.
These priority areas are the key building blocks of the CORE Group Climate Action, Inclusivity, and Health initiative:
1. Adolescent and Youth Engagement in Integrated Climate Activities
2. Inclusive and Equitable Approaches to Climate Action
3. Climate as a Cross-Cutting Issue to Address Food Security
