Webinar: Rehabilitation through a gender lens

2.4 billion people are in need of rehabilitation services worldwide. However, rehabilitation and assistive technology remain too often inaccessible or unaffordable for many people in need.
Gender shapes access, use, adherence and outcomes of rehabilitation services. Women and girls face barriers determined by their lower socioeconomic standing, lack of insurance, safety concerns, social norms, family obligations, shortage of women personnel in rehabilitation, and services or equipment that not adapted to diverse needs and requirements. Disability, ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, and lower educational levels can further affect participation or compound bias in referrals and assessment, and throughout the pathway.
Drawing on the key arguments and recommendations outlined in the factsheet “Rehabilitation through a gender lens”, the webinar will offer a space for dialogue among rehabilitation services’ users, health professionals, civil society, and policy-makers, in order to discuss the place of gender-responsive rehabilitation in achieving Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goal 3.
The webinar is organized by the Learning, Acting and Building for Rehabilitation in Health Systems Consortium (ReLAB-HS), a USAID-funded global project that seeks to co-design and implement innovative, comprehensive and cost-effective interventions for provision of rehabilitation and assistive technology. Led by the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit, and co-led by the Nossal Institute for Global Health, the consortium comprises of four other international partners: Humanity & Inclusion, MiracleFeet, Physiopedia, and Momentum Wheels for Humanity.
