BACKGROUND: UN Women’s flagship report “Turning Promises into Action: Gender Equality in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” examines through a gender lens the progress and challenges in the implementation of all the 17 SDGs– from ending poverty and hunger to tackling climate change. It highlights how women are affected by each of them and looks at both the ends and the means that are needed to make the achievement of the ambitious agenda for sustainable development a reality. This report lays the basis for robust, gender-responsive monitoring of the 2030 Agenda by:

  1. Showing how gender equality is central to the achievement of the SDGs and arguing for an integrated and rights-based approach to implementation
  2. Explaining gender data gaps and challenges for robust monitoring and establishing starting points and trends across a range of gender-related indicators based on available data
  3. Setting an agenda for strengthening accountability for gender equality commitments at global, regional and national levels

KEY HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Data snapshots and case studies in the report take in-depth look at the situation in the United States, Colombia, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Africa and Uruguay.
  • The report looks at two strategic targets under SDG 5; unpaid care work and ending violence against women and outlines how these policies are synergistic with other goals and targets
  • It looks beyond national averages to uncover the yawning gaps between women and girls who, even within the same country, are living in worlds apart, because of their income status, race/ethnicity, or where they live.
  • The report also provides wide-ranging recommendations for change, including the roll-out of integrated approaches that can leverage policy synergies.
