Understanding how people think, feel and act in relation to vaccination is vital to inform the development of strategies to generate acceptance and uptake for the vaccines. Generating and using data on behavioural and social drivers (BeSD) contains a set of tools – surveys, interview guides and related tools – to support gathering and use of quality data on the drivers and barriers to COVID-19 vaccines uptake. This guidebook will enable programmes to design, target and evaluate interventions to achieve greater impact with more efficiency, and to examine and understand trends over time.

years and above) in 15 African countries. This study will help identify knowledge gaps, beliefs and attitudes that can help inform Africa CDC as well as other immunization
stakeholders in their strategies for supporting the roll-out of Covid-19 vaccines in the continent”

This research demonstrates the complexity of the vaccine information ecosystem, where a cacophony of voices and narratives have coalesced to create an environment of extreme uncertainty. Two topics are driving a large proportion of the current global vaccine discourse, especially around a Covid-19 vaccine: the “political and economic motives” of actors and institutions involved in vaccine development and the “safety, efficacy and necessity” concerns around vaccines.
