Wednesday, March 7, 2012

In support of World TB Day 2012 spotlight on Pediatric TB, CORE Group’s Tuberculosis Working Group presented three webinars from world leaders in the fight against pediatric TB.

The first in the series was presented by Dr. Jeffrey Starke, Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine & Director of the Children’s Tuberculosis Clinic at Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Starke knows pediatric TB from both a clinical perspective AND from a global health programming perspective. For 25 years, Dr. Starke has been the director of the Children’s Tuberculosis Clinic of Houston, the busiest such clinic in the United States. He has authored 96 papers and over 40 book chapters on the subject.

Dr. Starke has consulted with state and local health departments, the CDC, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the ministries of health of several countries and the World Health Organization. He also has ties to the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative, which runs several pediatric clinics in sub-Saharan Africa. These clinics care for hundreds of children with tuberculosis, both HIV-infected and non-HIV-infected.
