At the Intersection of Gender, Sexuality and Disability in Asia
UCL Institute for Global Prosperity
“Gender and Prosperity in Asia” Series Lecture 2/6:
At the intersection of gender, sexuality and disability: Experiences, Attitudes and Practices from Asia
by Doctor Alessandra Aresu, Director of the Global Inclusive Health Division at Humanity & Inclusion.
Dr. Aresu is a gender, sexuality and disability specialist dedicated to promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights for all, with particular attention to young people and persons with disabilities.
Dr. Aresu’s current work is rooted in the research and development work she conducted in China throughout the years. She holds a PhD on Gender and Sexuality Education in China (Westminster University, 2006), and after her postdoctoral fellowship supported by the CCK Foundation (University of Bristol, 2007-2009) she moved back to China where she worked as Country Director of the China Program for the international NGO Humanity & Inclusion. From this position she led the design and implementation of the first pilot projects on gender, sexuality and disability developed in China in close collaboration with local organisations of persons with disabilities and international partners. Building on this unique experience, in 2017 Dr. Aresu started promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights of persons with disabilities globally and disability inclusion in the health sector more broadly.
Today she is the Director of the Global Inclusive Health division of Humanity and is well known for her advocacy and influencing work conducted in partnership with international partners and through several global networks: she led the establishment of the first Disability Inclusive Health Task Group at CORE Group for which she served as co-chair from 2017 to 2019 and, today, she serves as co-chair of the Inclusive Health Task Group at the International Disability and Development Consortium (IDDC) and of the Inclusive Health Working Group at the Global Action on Disability (GLAD) Network, in partnership with UN agencies and other global health stakeholders.
Dr. Aresu is the author of several articles and book chapters including “When Sexuality Meets Disability: Experiences, Attitudes and Practices from China” published in Diverse Voices of Disabled Sexualities in the Global South, Palgrave Macmillan in 2019 and “Adolescents with disabilities” published in Developing an Adolescent Competent Health Workforce: Training services providers in adolescent sexual and reproductive health, Pathfinder International in 2020.
