DESCRIPTION
The private sector is an important provider of health care in Nigeria. Prior to this report, however, data on the number of private sector facilities in Nigeria, the services they offer, and their geographic distribution were relatively limited. In 2012/13, the USAID-funded Strengthening Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS) Nigeria project conducted a census of all formal private health facilities (with the exception of patent medical vendors1 ) in the following six states: Abia, Benue, Edo, Kaduna, Lagos, and Nasarawa. Data were collected on infrastructure, staff, patient volume, and health services offered at all facilities visited. In Lagos state, additional data were collected on quality of family planning counseling, access to finance, and the business practices of the facilities. The results of that census are presented in this report.
