There is growing interest in the power of social enterprises to achieve sustainable health impact in the face of declining funder subsidy in low and middle-income countries. This is due to several converging trends: growing economies, widespread access to technology and information sharing, active participation of multinational corporations—including manufacturers and pharmaceuticals, and increased mobility and urbanization of populations.
PSI is exploring the potential for a regional Social Enterprise across key East African countries. This would aim to deliver a basket of affordable health options to the market, targeting low-mid income consumers (focusing on consumer segments that are underserved). This approach includes using commercial business processes, appropriate marketing and pricing strategies, as well as leveraging significant procurement and operational efficiencies to provide affordable pricing while moving towards financial sustainability over time.
PSI is seeking a Project Director to manage a three-year exploration period that will focus on identifying how PSI can grow the market for a range of reproductive and other health solutions and exploring the optimal business model to create a sustainable enterprise in the region.
