Who we are

American Refugee Committee is and always has been about amazing global citizens taking action to change our world. Today, we’re facing challenging global humanitarian crises that require 21st Century solutions. But we’ve found that co-creating together with impassioned, dedicated people, limited only by their own imaginations, remains the key to designing new solutions that resonate. We still believe that ARC should exist, first and foremost, as a platform for realizing the goodwill of everyday people – people from Sweden to Somalia, Minnesota to Malaysia, Uganda to the U.S.

We’ve found that something incredible will result as long as we begin the journey with amazing people, agree on a destination and move together towards it transparently and open to possibility.

If you are looking for a job, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a place where you can unleash your creativity, leverage your experience and that of those around you, we invite you to join us.

What we do in South Sudan

The overall objective of the ARC South Sudan program is to assist the South Sudanese to respond and react to community needs. To achieve this objective, ARC implements a multi-sectoral program that includes the household to hospital continuum of health care, gender based violence prevention and response activities, and WASH. ARC currently works closely with the County Health Departments in large scale county wide health programming. ARCs GBV programming is expanding its outreach mechanisms and introducing innovative new initiatives. ARC has program activities in Central and Eastern Equatoria, Upper Nile and Northern Bahr el Gazal.

Previously, the Republic of South Sudan was in transition from a state of crisis to early recovery. The work of NGOs in South Sudan was changing from direct service delivery to more capacity development of government departments. ARC’s focus of work relied on support to strengthen the county based health service delivery model and systems that are managed by decentralized government and closely engage community counterparts. Unfortunately, since the 15th December 2013 South Sudan is again in state of emergency with over 1.94 million displaced in country and the 1.94 million people crossed the border due to clashes between different armed actors.

What you will do as Senior Health Coordinator

The Senior Health Coordinator is responsible for the implementation and overall technical support/guidance and integration of ARC’s health programs, technical support and analysis of health monitoring data, and the design of new or continuing health programs. This requires technical support and oversight of both ongoing health programs and coordination with new emergency health projects.
For the ongoing health programs, the position will ensure the delivery of quality primary, secondary, and tertiary health care services, as well as community outreach; strengthen the capacity of the County Health Department (CHD); and increase community participation and ownership of health services. As they are performance-based contracts, it is imperative that this position closely monitor set milestones, and work with both staff and the CHD to implement course corrections, if needed, in order to achieve program targets.

The emergency health projects are being established to provide emergency primary health care services to internally displaced persons in different locations in South Sudan. The emergency health projects will be linked to services for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), and focus more on direct implementation instead of capacity development.

The Senior Health Coordinator will be working under the supervision of the Senior Program Coordinator and in collaboration with County Coordinators, Emergency Health Coordinator, Grants Manager, Finance Controller and Country Director. The Senior Health Coordinator will supervise the County Coordinators and Emergency Health Coordinator to provide technical support and coordination, as well as provide managerial oversight to designated field operations units. This position will be based in Juba, with extensive and frequent travel to field locations. The Senior Health Coordinator will have direct technical accountability to the ARC HQ based Senior Global Health Advisor.
