Child Survival and
Health Network Program

On February 3, 2005, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded the CORE Group a five-year cooperative agreement to manage the Child Survival and Health Network Program (CSH Network Program).

The purpose of the CSH Network Program is to strengthen private voluntary organization/ nongovernmental organization (PVO/NGO) capacity in child survival and health programs through collaboration and cross-learning and to enhance technical resources, strategies and exchanges of member organizations and their local partners in infant, maternal and child health, nutrition, family planning, HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases.

The CSH Network Program was awarded through the USAID Child Survival and Health Grants Program (CSHGP) located in the USAID Bureau for Global Health, Office of Health, Infectious Diseases and Nutrition. The CSH Network Program supports the overall program objective of the CSHGP - to contribute to sustained improvements in child survival and health outcomes through PVOs and their local partners.

The following are expected program results:

    1. Increased annual PVO membership to access an increased beneficiary population
    2. Increased PVO collaboration at country level to scale-up proven public health
        interventions for effective and sustainable programs.
    3. Increased PVO collaboration with global health alliances and initiatives to enhance,
        contribute and promote community level best practices.
    4. Improved PVO capacity to improve quality and access to health care services at
        community and district levels.
    5. Improved PVO capacity to improve key family and community practices to address
        public health issues in communities.

USAID Child Survival and Health Grants Program

The grants program contributes to sustained improvements in child survival and health outcomes by supporting the work of PVOs and their in-country partners. This work is aimed at reducing infant, child, maternal and infectious disease-related morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Sustained health improvements are achieved through capacity building of communities and local organizations and improved health systems and policies. In addition, the program seeks opportunities to scale up successful strategies to the national level and to contribute to the global capacity and leadership for child survival and health through the dissemination of best practices. In order to reach vulnerable populations, PVOs work in a variety of settings, from the smallest, most remote communities to large, district-wide programs and partner with local groups including community-based groups, local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and national and district health authorities.

Child Survival Technical Support+ (CSTS) Project

CSTS+ (a project of ORC/Macro International) offers an array of services to CSHGP and its partners, including grantees, potential grantees and new partners. CSTS+ activities seek to enhance the contributions of PVOs and their local partners to carry out effective, quality child and maternal health and infectious disease programs. CSTS+ gives ad hoc technical support to its partners through a team with expertise in monitoring and evaluation, technical child survival and health interventions, organizational development, family planning/reproductive health, and health management information systems.
